Black 3mm 75-durometer embroidery foam designed for creating bold, raised 3D and puff embroidery effects on caps, apparel, bags, and other embroidered products.

Characteristics

Price is per sheet

Embroidery 3D Foam Black is a specialty embroidery foam designed to create raised, dimensional lettering, logos, and decorative elements. Placed directly on top of the garment before stitching, the foam is covered by dense embroidery stitches to produce the distinctive elevated appearance commonly known as 3D or puff embroidery.

The 3mm thickness provides substantial lift beneath the embroidery, helping designs stand prominently above the surface of the garment. This dimensional effect is especially popular for embroidered caps and headwear, where bold lettering and logos benefit from additional height and definition.

With a 75-durometer density, the foam provides a firm foundation for embroidery while remaining suitable for cutting and perforation by properly digitized satin stitches. As the design is embroidered, the needle perforates the foam around the edges of the stitched area so excess material can be removed after sewing.

The black foam color is an excellent choice for black and other dark embroidery threads. Selecting foam that closely matches the thread color helps minimize the visibility of small pieces of foam that may remain around the edges of the finished embroidery.

Each sheet measures 11.5" x 18", providing ample material for multiple logos, lettering designs, and other dimensional embroidery applications depending on the size of the artwork.

For the best results, artwork intended for 3D foam should be digitized specifically for puff embroidery. Proper stitch direction, satin-stitch density, underlay, capping stitches, and reinforced corners help cover the foam completely and create clean, well-defined dimensional embroidery.

Usage Tips
  • Digitize artwork specifically for 3D or puff embroidery rather than using a standard flat-embroidery file.
  • Hoop and stabilize the garment according to the requirements of the item being embroidered.
  • Place the 3D foam over the area where the dimensional portion of the design will be stitched.
  • Cut the foam into a piece slightly larger than the embroidery area to minimize material waste.
  • Use temporary adhesive when necessary to help prevent the foam from shifting during embroidery.
  • Embroider the dimensional portion using properly digitized satin stitches that completely cover and perforate the foam.
  • Use sufficient stitch density to prevent the black foam from showing through the finished embroidery.
  • Reinforce corners and open ends with appropriate capping stitches to help contain the foam.
  • After embroidery is complete, carefully tear away excess foam from around the stitched design.
  • Remove small remaining pieces of foam with tweezers or another suitable embroidery finishing tool when necessary.
  • Match the foam color as closely as possible to the embroidery thread to make small remaining foam fragments less noticeable.
  • Test the complete design on a sample before beginning a production run, especially when determining stitch density and coverage.
  • Avoid using extremely small or highly detailed design elements for 3D foam; bold satin-stitch lettering and shapes generally produce the strongest dimensional effect.
